Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier has told quarterback Christian Ponder he will start his first NFL game this week against the Green Bay Packers, according to numerous reports. Frazier will address the media in his weekly press conference Wednesday.
Ponder, the Vikings first round pick in the 2011 draft, relieved Donovan McNabb late last week against the Chicago Bears. Ponder moved around in and out of the pocket, escaped pressure and succeeded in moving the Vikings up the field against the Bears.
He was 9-for-17 with 99 yards passing, no touchdowns, and no turnovers.
Ponder is only the third Vikings quarterback to be selected in the first round in their history. Tommy Kramer and Daunte Culpepper were taken in the first round previously.
McNabb will likely be demoted to the backup quarterback role.
The Vikings are 1-5 this season and in last place in the NFC North division. The Packers lead the division with a perfect 6-0 record.
