Cam Gordon, the unopposed Green Party candidate for Minneapolis City Council’s Second Ward, secured his victory shortly after polls closed Tuesday.
This will be Gordon’s fourth term. Ward 2 covers University neighborhoods Stadium Village, Prospect Park and Southeast Como.
In an interview Tuesday, Gordon said he’s hopeful to get more Green party participation on the council.
He said in the next four years, the city is going to have to address housing affordability and equity issues.
“We’re going to have to keep grappling with racial inequality in our city,” Gordon said. “Some people in our city have it better than others and it’s something we’re going to have to work at.”
Gordon has said he wants Minneapolis to lead the way in public health issues, such as environmental degradation, air quality issues, cancer, obesity and violence.
The larger political climate of the city has also been a focus of Gordon’s during his time on the city council.
“There seems to be this push toward anti-immigration, racism, bigotry, and I think there’s an opportunity for Minneapolis to … stand with the immigrant communities that are in our city,” Gordon told the Daily in September.
He said he also wants efforts put toward defending new Americans in the city, like creating a Minneapolis legal defense fund for those wary of deportation.
Gordon and his policy aids have touted their office’s work on environmental policies — the office has worked on a bring-your-own bag ordinance, clean energy partnerships and a climate action plan.
Gordon, a life-long Minneapolis resident, told the Daily he has always appreciated the city’s “urban wilderness” feel, and said his status as the council’s only Green Party member puts him in a “unique position.”
Gordon has received 97.1 percent of votes with nine of 11 precincts reporting at 8:45 p.m.
