Gophers junior transfer Trevor Mbakwe has been cleared to practice with the team just days after an announcement that he was cleared to enroll in fall classes at Minnesota. Mbakwe, a forward who was supposed to play with the team in 2009, has a court date in December regarding felony assault charges incurred in April in Miami. Athletics Director Joel Maturi said a decision on Mbakwe playing games this season will be made in the future. The University’s student-athlete policy says that students with felony charges cannot enroll in classes, but Maturi can decide to waive the policy. Maturi has said he believes Mbakwe is innocent throughout the summer. Here is Maturi’s official statement: “Trevor Mbakwe has not yet been cleared to play for the University of Minnesota basketball team. However, he is enrolled and will be able to practice with the team and also attend all team functions. A final decision on his competition status will be made at a later date.”
