The Minnesota Daily reported Monday that Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced plans that the city will start a post investigation of the events that took place in Minneapolis during the Republican National Convention. Meanwhile, The New York Times reported Wednesday that St. Paul officials are appointing two former federal prosecutors to âÄúreview the planning and strategies used by the police before and during the convention.âÄù As the investigation moves forward, St. Paul should be transparent and thorough in reviewing whether police used excessive force on protesters. The National Lawyers Guild already claims it has several documented instances of excessive force and they should be taken seriously. As this editorial board stated, moreover, the conduct of out-of-town police hires âÄî coming from as far away as Philadelphia and Las Vegas âÄî should be taken into consideration. St. Paul riot police told The Minnesota Daily that the out-of-town police acted excessively. Furthermore, the federal prosecutors should pay special attention to the more than 30 journalists arrested at the convention âÄî including two Associated Press reporters, Amy Goodman of âÄúDemocracy Now!âÄù and a The Minnesota Daily photographer. Minneapolis City Councilmen have called on Minneapolis to look into the pre-emptive arrests of out-of-town journalists for allegedly trespassing. St. Paul should take arrests during the convention as seriously. There needs to be a consensus dealt by St. Paul that the actions taken by city officials were absolutely necessary. A transparent and thorough investigation is the best way to come to establish whether police used appropriate force.
