While almost everyone has heard of Slayer and Megadeth, few people could actually name or recognize a song. You’re almost culturally obligated to go to this show, at least to just understand what all these metal guys are about. Plus, I mean come on, chanting 666 at the top of your lungs will probably be fun. Roy Wilkins Auditorium 175 W Kellogg Blvd. 7 p.m. $10-$59 Music – Jemina Pearl, The Goddamn Doo Wop Band, The Vignettes Sticky sweet, sassy punk caricature, Jemina Pearl, is touring in promotion of her 2009 solo debut, “Break it up.” After leaving the now defunct Be Your Own Pet, Pearl has managed to stay way from maturity and instead holds on to gang choruses and fizzy irony. Triple Rock Social Club 629 Cedar Ave. S. 8 p.m. $8 Friday: Music – D.R.I. D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles), is widely known as the first band to combine hardcore punk and thrash metal. Influencing acts like Slayer and Anthrax, D.R.I. is finding their way to Station 4 to throw one of their adrenaline fueled shows. Station 4 201 4th. St. E. 8 p.m. $10 Music/Dance – Get Cryphy! Crunk and Hyphy may not be the hottest trend in hip-hop right now, but DJ Jimmy2Times’ combination of the two through beat-mixing virtuosity breathes life into the aging styles. DJs Low B and Sega will be making guest appearances as well. First Avenue V.I.P. Lounge 701 1st Ave. N. 10 p.m. $3 Film – A Clockwork Orange You will either love or hate this movie. When the ultraviolent wreak havoc in Stanley Kubrickís disturbingly stylized London, the state comes in to ìcorrectî them. Following a young Beethoven-obsessed thug (Malcolm McDowell), Kubrickís adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ novel is a well-crafted and disturbing view of violence. Catch it on the big screen while you can. Uptown Theatre 2906 Hennepin Ave. 11:55 p.m. $9 Saturday Fashion – (in)sight Shell out the $20 to see what the seniors in the College of Design have been working on all year. Each senior student will show four or five pieces from their collections. You can pretend to be Joan Rivers or Anna Wintour as the models sashay down the runway … whatever floats your boat. Rapson Hall 5:30 p.m., 8 p.m. $20 Art – Re-Arted Emma Berg, curator at Fox Tax and founder of mplsart.org, wanted to know what could be produced if certain local artists, well, made an artsy baby. The Fox Tax folks assigned the creatives a partner and the pair collaborated on a piece. Fox Tax Gallery 503 1st Ave. N.E. Free Music – The Blind Shake Certain members of A&E love the Blind Shake, and we’re not the only ones. The three-piece noise-punk band will be playing at South by Southwest in March, bringing a slice of Midwestern wholesomeness (and guitars) to hipster-fied Texas. 331 Club 331 13th Ave. N.E. 10 p.m. Theater – “Rent” Starring local rapper and SotaRican Maria Isa and lead singer of local rock band Far From Falling, the Lab Theater’s production of “Rent” is getting buzz from theater and music fans alike. The Lab Theater 700 1st St. N. 7:30 p.m. $46.50 Music – Chooglin’ Palmer’s is the best bar on the West Bank. It’s a tiny dive; it’s cash only; the waitresses call you “honey” and the whiskey lemonades are all whiskey with some lemons thrown in for good measure. We at A&E can’t recommend it highly enough. And ridiculous name aside, Chooglin’ is a band gaining a following for their total comfort in all sorts of rock ‘n’ roll archetypes: punk, ballads, folksy rock, etc. If that’s not incentive, sometimes there’s a dog running around the bar that you can pet. Hot spot for out-of-towners (Lindsay Lohan, too) Chino Latino is having a fundraiser. Go, order a bunch of food and run up a big bar tab, because ten percent of all orders goes to Haiti relief. Culture to Consume Eat This: We forget about the suburbs. It’s not hard to do, since they seem to be dominated by chain restaurants and strip malls. But they’re working on it. Roseville’s Osaka sushi/seafood “steakhouse” opened quietly in December and though the fare is standard for a sushi place, it’s better than Old Chicago. Drink This: It’s the dead of winter. It’s cold. This weather lends itself to whiskey. So take a cue from my dad and start drinking Irish Coffee, a mix of strong, hot coffee and Irish whiskey. If you’re feeling fancy, you can add whipped cream and brown sugar to the top, but we’re not gonna tell if you sneak it into your morning lecture. Desperate times call for desperate measures, after all. Watch This: We don’t actually advocate that you obsessively tune into ABC;s silly dating game show “Conveyor Belt of Love,” but you might end up turning between premieres of “Lost,” “Important Things with Demetri Martin” and “The Sarah Silverman Show.” And, oh yeah, you could watch the Superbowl. Read This: Patti Smith, sometimes referred to as the “grandmother of punk,” is first and foremost an eloquent poet and writer. She’s had an incredible impact on art and music since she first stepped onto the New York scene in the early ’70s, and she details it in her new book, “Just Kids.” It’s a memoir of her pre-fame days and relationship with the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Expect cameos from other scene luminaries like Todd Rundgren and the guys from Television.
