Wednesday is Human Rights Day, and a rally will be held this weekend at the Walker Church in South Minneapolis to celebrate and fight for the rights of humans throughout the world. The rally was planned by the Anti-War Committee, a community group, but Students for a Democratic Society at the University of Minnesota will attend and speak at the event. Jess Sundin, a member of the Anti-War Committee, said partnering with community groups such as SDS is an important part of the event. âÄúThe rally will be about the U.S. perpetuating violence outside the country and human rights violations, but it will also be about the role of people to stop them from doing so,âÄù Sundin said. For the rally, SDS was given a speaking slot, which Tracy Molm , a member of the group, said they will use to perform a skit on the human rights violations in Iraq. Though the details of the skit have yet to be finalized, Molm said they will focus on issues such as the freedom of mobility for Iraqis. âÄúThey have their towns shut down and walls put up around them,âÄù Molm said. âÄúThe Iraqi people have a right to determine their own countryâÄôs future.âÄù In addition to violations in Iraq, Sundin said there will be speakers who will cover issues in Columbia, Somalia and Palestine, as well as a representative from the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Coalition who will discuss problems that immigrants face in Minnesota. Molm said she hopes the rally will bring attention to human rights issues. âÄúHuman Rights Day is a really big deal in many places, but it has fallen off the map in the United States,âÄù she said. Today marks the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights , according to the U.S. State Department.
