A handful of University of Minnesota-area businesses have closed Thursday to show support for a nationwide ‘Day Without Immigrants’ protest.
The daylong protest calls for immigrants not to work, open their businesses or spend their money, and is in response to President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda, which includes his U.S.-Mexico border wall and his now-stalled travel ban.
Around the University campus, businesses like Mesa Pizza and Sssdude-Nutz have closed their shops to show solidarity for the boycott.
Mesa, whose three locations are closed Thursday, posted on Facebook, “We are joining the nationwide “day without immigrants” movement,” and added, “immigrants of all kinds make this country run. They have names, hopes, dreams, fears, and virtually all are so grateful to be here in the United States, a nation build on immigration.”
Sssdude-Nutz and Himalayan in Dinkytown also posted on Facebook saying their shops would be closed Thursday as part of the protest.
“Let’s stand together,” Sssdude-Nutz wrote.
All three businesses will reopen on Friday.
