Two University of Minnesota swimmers were shot in Downtown Minneapolis Saturday.
The victims were University students Max McHugh and Nick Saulnier, according to an article by SwimSwam, which said McHugh’s family indicated the swimmers were not involved in the altercation preceding the shooting. The shooting occurred about 1:20 a.m. Saturday at North 2nd Avenue and North 3rd Street, according to the Star Tribune.
The two 21-year-old men were sent to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson.
The University of Minnesota Athletic Department released a statement regarding the shooting:
”Two members of the Minnesota men’s swimming team were in downtown Minneapolis this weekend when they were struck by stray gunfire. The individuals had recently ordered a pizza and were waiting on a ride home when the incident occurred. They received treatment at a local hospital and were released. Minnesota athletic director Mark Coyle and head coach Kelly Kremer have communicated with both student-athletes and they are recovering.”
The MPD spokesperson said this is not an area that experiences a high volume of shootings. The incident is currently under investigation.
