The NFL Draft continued on Saturday afternoon, seeing another Gopher selected. This time, linebacker Carter Coughlin heard his name called as the fourth pick of the seventh round. 

The New York Giants selected Coughlin with the 218th overall pick. He became the fourth Gopher chosen in this year’s draft, becoming the third member of the defense to turn pro.

Coughlin enjoyed a productive four year career with the Gophers, appearing in 11 games as a true freshman in 2016. His most productive season came in 2018, recording 15 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles. That season, his 9.5 sacks ranked tied for third in the Big Ten.

In 2019, Coughlin led Minnesota with 9.5 tackles for loss, ranking sixth on the team with 49 total tackles. He earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors for the second consecutive season.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Coughlin flashed, running a 4.57-second 40-yard dash. His athleticism was also on display with a 36-inch vertical jump and 126 inch-broad jump.

Coughlin becomes the fourth Gopher drafted this year, along with safety Antoine Winfield Jr., wide receiver Tyler Johnson, and linebacker Kamal Martin. He also follows his former teammate at Minnesota and Eden Prairie High School, Blake Cashman, who the New York Jets selected in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
