The UniversityâÄôs womenâÄôs golf team beat three Big Ten teams this past weekend. The Gophers took fifth place in the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich . They were in fourth place after 36 holes but fell to fifth Sunday to end the tournament at the par-72 course. Michigan State tied Kent State at the end of team play but took the team title after the second tie-breaker. âÄúOn this golf course and in this field, it was a wonderful finish,âÄù Director of Golf Brad James said . The Gophers beat Big Ten teams from Northwestern, Michigan and Iowa, who finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. âÄúIt shows we are getting better. In the last four or five years, we havenâÄôt been able to compete with Big Ten teams. This is one of those times where we beat up on three Big Ten teams. It shows me that the kids are improving,âÄù James said. Sophomore Teresa Puga finished highest on the team at 14th with a 10-over par and sophomore Mary Narzisi tied for 15th with a 12-over. Senior Kelli Berns ended in 19th with 14-over . The three combined for 36 bogies and 12 birdies. âÄúWe had bogies without making some birdies, and that kind of hurt us today,âÄù associate head coach Kristine Wessinger said. The team members, though, said they will continue to work on the little aspects of the game in hopes that theyâÄôll see themselves on the leader board. âÄúI need to keep working on my mind and how to think on the golf course, on my swing and on my short game,âÄù Puga said. And James said the coaching staff has found a winning formula. âÄúThe results are showing that what they are working on is what they need to work on,âÄù James said. MenâÄôs Golf The Minnesota menâÄôs golf team enters MondayâÄôs tournament as the highest-ranked team in the field. The men play in the 15th annual Adams Cup of Newport/Cleveland Golf Classic in Newport, R.I. Sept. 22 and 23 and enter as the 14th team in the country , according to Golfweek. Tee times are 12:30 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. James said the competition wonâÄôt be as strong compared to the teams in the Gopher Invite, and that it may serve as a chance for younger players to see some playing time. The team might face a test with the design of the golf course. The par-72 Newport National Golf Club golf course is different from the GopherâÄôs home course in Wayzata because itâÄôs windier and more open. James said this might serve as a challenge but thinks this golf course suits the team. The lineup wonâÄôt change much from the one at the Gopher Invite. Junior Thomas Campbell will be the only new face and will replace senior Andy Paulson.
