Minnesota junior Mitch Potter ran the second-fastest time in the world this season in the 400-meter dash, topping the impressive list of performances by Minnesota’s men’s track and field team at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Saturday. The Gophers captured the team title in the event with 65.50 points, but more importantly qualified nine athletes in 10 events for the NCAA Championships on June 11-14 in Sacramento, Calif.
Potter posted a time of 44.93 seconds to win the 400-meter final in a photo-finish, edging Baylor’s Darold Williamson (44.95) by two-hundredth of a second. The only faster time in the world this season was a time of 44.83 ran by former LSU sprinter Derrick Brew on May 3 in Mexico City.
“To run the second-fastest time in the world this season is pretty impressive,” coach Phil Lundin said in a release. “Mitch’s ability to fight is unsurpassed, he’s so tough. It was a delight to watch.”
