OK, so it might sort of suck that school is already upon us âÄî summer came and went in a flurry of blasé weather that rarely reached 85 degrees. But I donâÄôt really mind; IâÄôve been more than ready to get back into the Tuesday pages for your weekly Fashionista fix. Miss me? The influx of fake Chanel rhinestone earrings and lace-trim tank tops seems to prove a point: Absence doesnâÄôt make the U girlsâÄô hearts fonder but only reverts them back to their yucky old wardrobes. As you can see, IâÄôve changed my look a little (but expect the blonde hair back within a few months), and IâÄôm hoping to change up the column, too. As always, I want letters, suggestions and comments; if youâÄôve got something to say, please donâÄôt hesitate to a) e-mail me, or b) find me at the bar and give me a piece of your mind. (P. S. I love meeting Fashionista readers at Blarney and The Library.) IâÄôm hoping to do more video segments, podcasts and even a few shoots (look for one in the coming weeks with U models, local boutique offerings and the work of the exceptionally talented photog Mr. Jules Ameel) to keep the pages of the Daily as chic as possible. So, on that note, maybe itâÄôs time for a little refresher course. A whole new crop of first-years have moved on into the Superblock, and upon moving my little brother into his new home in Pioneer, I noticed a surprising amount of not-hideous ensembles on the new kids in town. For every leggings-and-miniskirt combo there was a cute, off-the-shoulder top and shorts. Way to represent, babies. But there are always, always repeat offenders of bad taste. Here, in convenient list form, are the top three things that give my Fashionista self migraines: 1. Fake designer anything, but especially fake Chanel. The sunglasses, the earrings and the Rue Cambon totes âÄî I can tell a real from a faux, and ladies, 97 percent of you might have been swindled. 2. Coach bags. Coach bags are ugly. If youâÄôre going to drop money on a bag, you should not spend it on some tacky, logo-emblazoned purse more appropriate for a junior high girl. Buy something tasteful and leather, maybe Marc by Marc Jacobs or Foley & Corinna. 3. Carelessness. To all of you, males and females alike, itâÄôs really not that hard to get dressed in the morning. If you spend an hour on your hair and makeup, couldnâÄôt you take five minutes to shimmy into some cute jeans instead of sweats and Uggs? Make it a goal for yourself, especially if 2009-2010 is your last year within the confines of the U, to take the steps to figure out what youâÄôre going to look like as a full-fledged adult. The working world is fast approaching, unless youâÄôre planning to pull a Van Wilder and stay in college for eight years âÄî not that IâÄôd blame you with this job market. (ThatâÄôs another topic for an upcoming Fashionista: how to stretch your clothing budget âÄî something IâÄôve had more than a few issues with. Hello, new Nordstrom card!) MNFashion Week is fast approaching, so look to my column for information on all the happenings. I strongly advise you all to check out local twin models Coco and BreezyâÄôs Gemela Amor (Twin Love) sunglasses trunk show/going away party (theyâÄôre moving to New York) at VS Social Standard at 9 p.m on Wednesday. Be sure to pick up a pair of their shades (running from $40-$50) before they accomplish bigger and better things on the East Coast, because I have a feeling their designs are going to be huge. Also going to be huge is local boy RaâÄômon-Lawrence Coleman, who I interviewed this summer about his time on âÄúProject Runway,âÄù airing on Lifetime right now. HeâÄôs showing during New York Fashion Week, and even though IâÄôm not able to go and see the show, you can bet IâÄôll be looking rabidly on Style.com for the collection. A bunch of fashionable local folks like Vita.mn/EclecticoiffeurâÄôs Jahna Peloquin and Fox 9âÄôs Robyne Robinson will be there to represent the Cities, and what better supporters could we want in our place?
