University of Minnesota police responded to two separate reports of car thefts near the Superblock this weekend.

Both cars were parked on Delaware Street Southeast and were broken into Saturday night. According to University police reports, items were stolen from each, and neither victim saw the suspects.

The first break-in occurred in the Oak Street Ramp. Suspects allegedly broke into the car by pulling the lock out before taking the victim’s iPod and leaving the scene.

The victim, Ryan Westhoff, was visiting his fiancé, a University student, when the crime occurred. He said when he returned to his car he saw the door lock hanging out of the car. There were no witnesses to the crime.

The second break-in was in the Dinnaken Properties Inc. parking lot, where suspects unlocked a car door and took a GPS, cash and an umbrella, according to the report.

University police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner said he is not too concerned that both crimes occurred along the same street.

“These things tend to happen,” Miner said. “Lately, break-ins have been fairly spread out.”

Although Miner said break-in trends occasionally happen in certain areas, he doesn’t see one beginning in the Delaware Street area.

Miner said he doesn’t think the thefts are related.

The victim of the second theft, a student at the University, said he thinks the area is “generally safe,” and he would not have expected anyone to break into his car.
