Minnesota’s men’s golf team is amid one of its best seasons in recent memory. It continued that trend this weekend at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
The Gophers finished third as a team with an aggregate score of 6-over par. Minnesota has now placed in the top three of a tournament three times this spring season. Iowa, the tournament host, finished 17 strokes ahead of Minnesota and won the competition.
Gophers freshman Jose Mendez also maintained his strong start to his collegiate career, finishing third with a final score of 3-under par. This is the fourth top-10 finish for Mendez this season. Hawkeyes senior Steven Ihm walked away with the individual crown.
Minnesota head coach John Carlson said a couple weeks ago that Mendez has the potential to be one of the best golfers in the Big Ten before it’s all said and done.
Jon DuToit (+1), Jon Trasamar (+5), Alex Gaugert (+6) and Matt Rachey (+7) rounded out the scoring lineup for the Gophers.
Minnesota will play in one more tournament next weekend before the Big Ten tournament in early May.
