A weekend series which has seen one of the worst postseason losses in the history of Minnesota men’s hockey as well as one of its best played games of the season concludes tonight, with a trip to St. Paul for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Final Five on the line.
Minnesota responded Saturday night with a 4-2 season-salvaging win after getting beat 6-0 just a night before. The Gophers were on the ropes in the third period when Matt Frattin scored the go-ahead goal, but Jacob Cepis scored the equalizer on a power play he created, and freshman Seth Helgeson notched his first ever point on the game-winning goal.
As for tonight’s starting lineups, Minnesota’s is identical to last night’s, with Helgeson remaining in the lineup ahead of Brian Schack. For North Dakota, they have made a change on tehir third line, replacing David Toews with freshman Joe Gleason.
Tonight’s Gophers/Sioux deciding game 3 is one of three such games tonight. Denver and Wisconsin both swept their first round opponents, so their tickets are punched to next weekend’s WCHA Final Five. Three more spots remain on the line, however. St. Cloud State hosts Minnesota-State and Minnesota-Duluth hosts Colorado College for the other two spots in St. Paul.
