Six Baltimore Police Department officers involved in the death of a suspect have been charged with crimes, the Baltimore Sun reported Friday.

Friday’s charges come after days of protests — some of which turned violent –– in Baltimore after Freddie Gray, 25, died of a spinal cord injury while in police custody, according to the New York Times.

Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore City State’s Attorney said Gray’s arrest was illegal and that he was repeatedly denied medical attention, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The officers were charged with a range of crimes, including murder and manslaughter, the Baltimore Sun reported.

Protests sprouted up across the country this week as a result of Gray’s death in cities like Boston, Denver and Minneapolis, the Washington Post reported.

Gray’s death is the latest in a recent string of high-profile incidents  across the nation where African-Americans have died due to police actions or suspected actions. Such as Eric Garner in New York City, Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., and Marcus Golden in St. Paul.
