Minnesota football coach Glen Mason announced Monday that Luke Tressel has been promoted to wide receivers coach.
Tressel, who served as the Gophers’ assistant strength and conditioning coach in 2004 and a graduate assistant on offense in 2002 and 2003, is the nephew of Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and the son of Buckeyes running backs coach Dick Tressel.
Grier is player of week
Minnesota men’s basketball junior Vincent Grier was named Big Ten player of the week Monday for his play in a pair of Gophers victories.
Grier scored 14 points in Minnesota’s 71-54 win at Michigan on Wednesday and 32 points, including 26 in the second half alone, in Saturday’s 60-50 win over then-No. 19 Wisconsin.
In the latest Associated Press top-25 poll released Monday, the Gophers (16-6, 6-3 Big Ten) received 50 votes, which was the fifth-most votes among nonranked teams.
Alvarez on national team
Minnesota men’s gymnastics senior Guillermo Alvarez was selected as one of nine gymnasts for the U.S. National Team by USA Gymnastics on Monday after his performance in the event finals of the Winter Cup in Las Vegas this weekend.
Alvarez finished second on the pommel horse and the vault and took seventh on the floor exercise.
Wendell, Darwitz named to Patty Kazmaier Award list
Minnesota women’s hockey players Krissy Wendell and Natalie Darwitz are among the 10 finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, given annually to the top player in women’s hockey.
Darwitz, a junior, leads the WCHA in points with 83, and Wendell tops the conference in goals.
Minnesota is one of three teams, along with Wisconsin and Harvard, to have two finalists.
Magazine honors Gentil, Bowman
Minnesota women’s volleyball player Paula Gentil was named Volleyball Magazine’s defensive player of the year.
Gentil was also chosen as a first-team All-American, while setter Kelly Bowman received honorable mention.
