Minnesota has had its share of players missing the season and now they can add guard Amir Coffey to that list.

Coffey will not play for the rest of the season due to his shoulder injury, head coach Richard Pitino announced in a press release on Saturday.

The release said Coffey will undergo surgery on his shoulder, which will keep him from finishing the rest of the season. He suffered the injury during the Jan. 3 game against Illinois. 

The Pioneer Press reported that Coffey’s father said the injury was a humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament (HAGL) — or a ligament is ripped off the bone because of dislocation of the shoulder.

Coffey finished his sophomore season averaging 14 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He played in every game but one last year, earning a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team with his first-year performance. 

Since his injury, which coincided with the suspension of Reggie Lynch, the Gophers have lost 11 of 12 games. 

The Gophers are 14-14 overall heading into their matchup with Wisconsin Monday in Madison, Wisconsin.
