Minnesota men’s track and field sophomore Ibrahim Kabia smashed a school record and a University Fieldhouse record while provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships with his performance in the 60-meter dash Saturday.
In the finals of the 60-meter at the Snowshoe Open, Kabia won with a time of 6.66 seconds, besting the school record of 6.78 seconds and the University Field House record of 6.71 seconds.
The Gophers won 10 events in all and had four athletes provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Gophers win three
Minnesota’s softball team went 3-2 at the OU/Nike Classic this past weekend in Norman, Okla.
The Gophers got thumped 11-1 in five innings by Northwestern State (Louisiana) in Minnesota’s first game of the tournament.
Minnesota (7-3 overall) won its first contest Saturday, picking up a 3-2 victory over Birmingham Southern, but fell 6-5 to No. 14 Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon.
But the Gophers finished the tournament on a high note with a 7-6 win over Birmingham Southern in eight innings Sunday morning and a 4-2 win over Northwestern State in the afternoon.
Solberg shines
Junior Dawn Solberg of the Minnesota women’s track and field team broke her own team record in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday the Parents’ Day Open at the University Field House.
Solberg, who ran a 8.62 at the Iowa State Classic a little more than a week ago, posted a 8.58 on Saturday, winning the event.
The Gophers won seven events on the day.
Gophers win a pair
The Minnesota’s women’s tennis team won a pair of matches this weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center, beating Louisville 4-3 on Friday and Denver 6-1 on Sunday.
Trailing the Cardinals 3-1 on Friday, the Gophers won three straight singles matches to get the come-from-behind win.
Junior Lindsay Risebrough won in two sets to bring Minnesota within one point, junior Danielle Mousseau won in three sets to tie the match and senior Ashley Schellhas won in three sets to end the match.
Saturday’s match wasn’t nearly as dramatic as the Gophers (4-2 overall) won the doubles point and five of six singles matches.
Wilkins leads Gophers
The Minnesota men’s tennis team opened the Big Ten season with a narrow 4-3 win over Michigan State on Saturday.
The Gophers (6-2 overall, 1-0 Big Ten) took the doubles point with a pair of victories, then went back and forth in the singles matches before pulling out the victory.
Senior Nich Edlefsen won his doubles match as well as the No. 4 singles match, but senior Sion Wilkins became the hero with his victory in the No. 6 single match.
With the match tied 3-3 and Wilkins already down one set, the senior bounced back and won the second and third sets to pick up the point and give the Gophers the win.
