Bill Tramel, the Gophers’ associate head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach, was named the head coach at Marshall University on Wednesday.
Tramel spent six years as a coach at Minnesota before his promotion to associate head coach for his last two seasons. Tramel also recruited for the Gophers. He helped sign top Minnesota talents like Michael Richards and Curt Carlson as well as international swimmers such as Croatia’s Hrvoje Capan.
During his time with the Gophers, Tramel has helped both the men’s and women’s teams claim several Big Ten conference titles and top-10 finishes at the NCAA championships. As a distance coach, he has qualified at least one swimmer in the 1,650-yard freestyle at the national championships in 14 of the last 15 years.
Tramel coached previously at North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Missouri, his alma mater.
Marshall sports a Division-I Conference USA women’s swimming and diving program, but it has no men’s team. Former head coach Russell Hunt resigned in March.
