Milwaukee graduate transfer Akeem Springs committed to the Gophers on Friday, announcing his decision on Periscope.
The 6-foot-4-inch, 210 pound guard will take the scholarship left open after Kevin Dorsey decided to transfer from the team. Springs will be eligible to play his final year immediately, and provide experience to the Gophers backcourt. The team's only other upperclassmen guard next season will be junior Nate Mason.
"The biggest thing for me was the players. The players embraced me," Springs said of his decision on Periscope. "They all know that something is going to happen. They believe they are going to win, they believe that success is in the near future."
Springs averaged 13.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.69 assists per game last season at Milwaukee. He shot 49 percent from the field, 35.1 percent from three-point range, and 71 percent from the free throw line.
"I grew up a Big Ten kid," Springs, a Waukegan, Illinois native, said on Periscope. "Getting the chance to play against the teams I grew up watching … it means everything to me. I can’t even explain what that means to me."
