Tim Hortons, a popular Canada-based doughnut and coffee chain, is set to open a new shop in Dinkytown.
Steve Young, who owns the divided building where Sssdude-Nutz and the now-closed Bruegger’s Bagels are located, said Tim Hortons signed a lease in the Dinkytown area but would not comment on the specific location. The Star Tribune reported that the restaurant is expected to open in the fall.
University of Minnesota alum and Sssdude-Nutz co-owner Bradley Taylor said a demolition architect inspecting the space next door first told him about the new chain.
“I was a little taken aback,” Taylor said. “All I can do is keep doing me and just see what happens.”
Tim Hortons has about 3,600 restaurants in Canada and 869 in the United States. While both businesses offer doughnuts, Tim Hortons offers a full menu with sandwiches and soups. Sssdude-Nutz offers specialty doughnuts featuring candy bar, cookie, and cereal pieces.
The chain has also signed a deal with Bloomington-based Restaurant Development Partners to start franchises in Minnesota, the Star Tribune reported. And according to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, the chain plans to add a shop in Brooklyn Park.
