The University of Minnesota’s
Panhellenic Council elected eight new executive board members on Sunday,
including a new president, Molly Haeg.
Haeg, a junior studying kinesiology and leadership, will leave her
position as chapter delegate for Alpha Chi Omega and become president within
the next month.
As the newly elected president, Haeg said she hopes to show the campus
community what sorority life is all about.
“We are a group of really strong, extremely amazing women and I think
that needs to be celebrated,” said Haeg.
Jill Barrette, voting delegate for Phi Beta Chi and Ashley German,
voting delegate for Alpha Epsilon Phi said they both chose Haeg because she
planned to keep small chapters involved.
“That was a really big thing for us — especially recruitment-wise and
involvement-wise,” Barette said.
Haeg said this is one of her main focuses now that she was elected
president.
“I want to make sure each chapter feels included, supported and
celebrated for all that they bring to our community. We are at our strongest
when each chapter is at its greatest,” Haeg said.
German said she voted for Haeg because she and her chapter liked the
idea of fresh faces in the PHC.
Barette said she looks forward to Haeg creating a greater sense of
cohesiveness among the greek community and other student groups.
“The main thing I want to focus on is just fostering the relationships
between us and the parts of university, including the other three chapters of greek
life, Minnesota Student Association and Student Unions and Activities,” Haeg
said.
The PHC, which oversees fifteen sororities on campus, is comprised of eight
officers. To be considered for an officer position each must complete an
application, participate in an interview then give a speech and answer
questions at the general election.
Emma Mazour, current PHC vice president of public relations, said they
use this extensive process to ensure each candidate is a good representation of
the greek community.
“It’s to make sure we have the very best people for each role,” Mazour
said.
In addition to electing a president, PHC delegates selected seven other
executive officers who will serve for 2017 calendar year:
Executive Vice President Amanda Teske
Vice President of Public Relations Shelby Stahl
Vice President of Finance April Chung
Vice President of Recruitment Claire McCartan
Vice President of Member Development Kaela Juarez
Vice President of Programming Alex Plevell
Vice President of Academics Brooke Braman
