A potentially rabid bat was spotted on campus Wednesday morning, according to an all-campus alert.
The bat was found around 11 a.m. near the Donhowe Building on East Bank. The bat’s conduct and the time it was spotted are potential signs of rabies, but staff from the Minnesota Department of Health were unable to track down the bat to run tests, according to the alert.
The alert urged students, faculty and staff to avoid coming into contact with the bat, and warned of rabies’ fatal effects. Bats are at an especially high risk of transmitting the disease because their small teeth leave bite marks that may go unnoticed by victims, according to the alert. Anyone who may have been in physical contact is urged to immediately contact their health care provider or call MDH at 651-201-5414.
