Fargo, N.D. âÄî Residents of Fargo/Moorhead are racing against the flood, as they have only 24 hours before the Red River is expected to crest. The city of Moorhead said Thursday afternoon that mandatory evacuations for south Moorhead had been initiated due to a report issued by the National Weather Service, which increased the expected crest of the river to 42 feet, more than the previous estimation of 41 feet. In a special Fargo City Commissioners meeting held Thursday night, commissioners announced Fargo would begin voluntary evacuation Friday for any resident living in dike retaining areas. Efforts were already underway to evacuate a neighborhood and a nursing home in south Fargo due to potential breaches in the dike, commissioners said. Commissioners also said the new crest height prediction requires that the dikes be raised from 43 feet to 44 feet. Maj. Gen. David A. Sprynczynatyc, Adjutant General of North Dakota, presented a plan to send more North Dakota guardsmen into areas in need of further flood protection. He said at least 150 more guardsmen would be called Thursday night and even more Friday to raise the dikes. Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker, chairman of the city commission, assured Fargoans that efforts to fight the flood would not cease. âÄúWe do not want to give up yet,âÄù Walaker said. âÄúWe want to go down swinging if we go down.âÄù
