The proposed reconstruction of Eighth Street Southeast has moved into its next stage.
Minneapolis City Council approved a design agreement with the University of Minnesota on Friday. The University will reimburse the city for the cost of designing the new road.
Eighth Street Southeast lies next to Siebert Field and has drawn complaints from residents and property owners. Last month, the Minnesota Daily reported the University had offered to fund the street’s redevelopment with money from Parking and Transportation Services.
The design agreement doesn’t commit the city to redeveloping the road, according to a staff report. That would require a separate agreement and a public hearing before the project could begin.
Officials don’t yet have an estimate for the proposed project’s cost. Sandy Cullen, University transportation systems design manager, said Parking and Transportation Services would fund part of the reconstruction.
