Friday Music âÄì Ray LaMontagne State Theatre 824 Hennepin Ave. 8 p.m. Price Varies Maine-hailing Ray LaMontagne continues his national tour with that ever-lovelorn rasping voice. LaMontagneâÄôs whispering is enough to wrap any wailing baby or stoned hipster into a peaceful sleep. Theater âÄì .faust Red Eye Theater 15 14th St. W. 8 p.m. $15 Students Composed and presented by the Sandbox Theatre company, âÄú.faustâÄù explores a fusion of classical German folklore and the everlasting literature of Goethe and Marlowe. Something tells A&E that Charlie Daniels BandâÄôs âÄúThe Devil Went Down to GeorgiaâÄù wonâÄôt be featured on the soundtrack. Music âÄì Solid Gold First Avenue 701 1st Ave. N. 8 p.m. $10 Local buzz band Solid Gold sells out shows like crazy when they play back at home. They’re gaining momentum overseas, so it’s not just a Minneapolis phenomenon. The foursome is back from playing CMJ in New York and will play with the Hood Internet mash-up masters at their First Avenue mainroom show. (The Hood Internet does a fabulous mash-up of R. Kelly’s “I’m a Flirt” with Broken Social Scene’s “7/4 Shoreline,” FYI.) Art âÄì NEMAA Fall Fine Arts Show Grainbelt Bottling House 79 13th Ave. N.E. 6 p.m. Free N.E. is a creative little neighborhood and tonight’s 10th annual Fall Fine Arts Show only seeks to prove that. Comedy âÄì Parry Hotter and The Half-Drunk Twins ComedySportz 3001 Hennepin Ave. S. 10:30 p.m. $12 This reenactment of the seven Harry Potter books satirizes everything from casting spells to teenage wizard angst, complete with pop culture references galore and even a few dancey musical scenes. Saturday Music âÄì Bowling for Soup Station 4 201 4th St. E., St. Paul 7 p.m. $13 Remember back in the day when Bowling for Soup first released âÄúGirl All the Bad Guys WantâÄù and followed up with âÄú1985âÄù? All of us college students were still rocking bowl-cuts and metallic fingernail polish. Oh, nostalgia. Film âÄì âÄúThe GraduateâÄù Uptown Theatre 2906 Hennepin Ave. 11:45 p.m. $9 Here’s to you, Mrs. Robinson. Jesus loves you more than you will know (wo, wo, wo). God bless you, please, Mrs. Robinson. Heaven holds a place for those who pray (hey, hey, hey). Music âÄì The Fiery Furnaces Turf Club 1601 University Ave. W., St. Paul 8 p.m. $15 The Fiery Furnaces are kinda weird. Their cover of The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” sounds like a female Bob Dylan sing-speaking, and, well, it doesn’t always endear a listener. However, the male-female duo from New York have a devoted following, and said fans will definitely show up to St. Paul’s touchstone Turf Club tonight. Theater âÄì âÄúRuinedâÄù Mixed Blood Theater 1501 4th St. S. 7:30 p.m. $18-28> West BankâÄôs Mixed Blood Theater presents the Pulitzer Prize winning play about a woman who runs a brothel in a mining town in the Republic of the Congo. Art âÄì To Have It About You: The Dorothy And Herbert Vogel Collection Weisman Art Museum 333 E. River Road Free This exhibition is a tribute to Dorothy and Herbert VogelâÄôs contribution of 50 works of art to one museum in each state in the US. The Fred was lucky enough to receive the VogelsâÄô nod for Minnesota, with numerous minimalist and post-minimalist contributions from contemporary American artists. Music- STNNNG 501 Club 501 Washington Ave. S. 8 p.m. Tickets TBA My roommate gave me a withering glance when this local punk-ish band’s music came out of my speakers, and don’t get me wrong, it is pretty noisy stuff. If you feel like getting back in touch with your mosh pit-loving teenage boy self, then by all means, see STNNNG at the 501. They’ll be joined by (LOUD) Pennsylvania band Microwaves. CULTURE TO CONSUME Eat This: I eagerly anticipate the coming of fall just so I have an excuse to make pumpkin pie/chocolate chip fusion cookies. But then again, they taste just as good in July as they do in Nov. Drink This: “Cinnamon toast” cocktail: 1 1/4 oz. Captain Morgan 6 oz. apple cider (hot) 1 T. sugar (for rimming) 1 T. cinnamon (for rimming) Rim your glass with the sugar and cinnamon mix before serving. Read This: Fight the grey days and promise of snow with a book, like Jonathan Safran Foer’s controversial pro-vegetarian schpiel “Eating Animals.” Natalie Portman is pro-Safran Foer, but A&E’s not so sure. We like turkey. Watch This: Lady GaGaâÄôs new video for “Bad Romance” premiered Monday and it’s in your best interest to check it out, straight dudes, gay dudes and chicks. If it’s not your style, “SNLâÄôs” Kristen Wiig reading aloud from Suzanne Somer’s autobiography is a laugh. (Will Forte reading from Tommy Lee’s is great too.) Listen to This: Redheaded Brit stunner Florence + the Machine are everywhere, from music blogs to “It’s On with Alexa Chung.” Her effervescent single “Kiss with a Fist” may or may not celebrate domestic violence in the name of love, but either way it’s going to be so ubiquitous that it’ll play on Apple commercials AND “Grey’s Anatomy.” Click This: Axl Rose’s ex Stephanie Seymour is in the midst of a nasty divorce and the details of the case keep getting more and more entertaining. She’s one of the most beautiful (and most unpleasant) people in the world; he spends $500,000 on polo horses. Luckily Vanity Fair finds it as entertainingly juicy as we do.
