Revered writer and director Jean-Luc Godard offers up a visually beautiful, intellectually challenging meditation on love in this film-within-a-film. Discussions range all over, picking apart the inherent relationships between things such as memory and history, nationality and identity, love of others and love of self. Guaranteed to be loved and loathed by equal numbers of those who see it, this movie will inspire conversation and contemplation, perhaps particularly with regard to the commentary on the United States and Americans, given the recent political goings on and war posturing. For those new to Godard, chances are you’ll leave either heading to the video store to investigate his work further or trying to forget you ever heard his name. (Gabriel Shapiro)
