This weekend, the PGA Tour will return to Minnesota for the first time since the PGA Championship in 2009. 

Previously part of the PGA Tour Champions, the 3M Open was recently added as an event in the regular tour for the next seven years and will be first annual stop in Minnesota since 1969. The event will feature the No. 1 golf player in the world, Brooks Koepka, and stars like Phil Mickelson and Jason Day. But for many Minnesota fans, the most notable mention among the players will be former Gopher Tom Lehman.

Born in Austin, Minnesota, Lehman attended the University of Minnesota from 1978-1981, becoming a three-time All-American and All-Big Ten golfer. He won the 1981 Minnesota Amateur title and turned pro in 1982.

As a pro golfer, Lehman spent time as the No. 1 player in the world with tournament wins at the Tour Championship and the Phoenix Open and one major title win at the 1996 Open Championship. He was a member of three Presidents Cup teams and three Ryder Cup teams and was the captain of the 2006 Ryder Cup team.

Lehman is the only golfer in history to have been awarded the Player of the Year honor on the PGA Tour, the Web.com Tour and the PGA Tour Champions.

Lehman will host events throughout the week as a special ambassador for the tournament, and, as a course designer as well, has played a role in supervising changes made to the TPC Twin Cities course. The course has been lengthened and modified to be more competitive in order to challenge some of the world’s best players. The 3M Open begins on July 4 and will run through July 7 at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine.

Another Minnesota native, Tim Herron, will be participating in the Open as well. Herron, born in Minneapolis, turned professional in 1993 and has four professional wins.
