A University of Minnesota student was found dead Monday in an apparent murder-suicide near Rochester, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.
Kayla Koranda, 18, was visiting her longtime friend Nicholas Roecker in New Haven Township, Minn., when Roecker shot her and himself. Police found Koranda dead at the scene. Roecker, 19, died after being taken to the Mayo Clinic.
Family members told police that Roecker, a University of Minnesota-Duluth student, had depression. Both Roecker and Koranda graduated from a Rochester high school last year.
In a statement, Danita Brown Young, vice provost for student affairs and dean of students, said the University is working to provide “counseling, mental health and other support to Kayla’s friends and fellow students at the U.”
