Our Mission:
The Minnesota Daily is a Non-Profit (501(c)3), independent, student-run print and digital publication serving the University of Minnesota community with a mission to provide accurate, timely and responsible coverage of all events and news affecting the University’s community; to create an open forum where stakeholders of the University can communicate and exchange ideas; and to provide educational training and experience to University students in all areas of news operations.

Summary:
The general manager will develop and execute the overall direction and leadership for the Minnesota Daily with a strong emphasis on strategic planning, decisive leadership within the organization and relationship-building with students, the Board of Directors, and University stakeholders. The General Manager will need to work well with people and cultivate a strategic vision that creatively meets the organization’s short- and long-term financial goals.

Essential Duties:
Build relationships and develop the Daily’s key constituency networks to plan and coordinate fundraising opportunities that generate revenue.
Seek out and request grants and other revenue opportunities in support of the Daily’s mission.
Create and implement a business plan to generate revenue above expenditures to assure the Daily’s ability to serve the University in the future.
Communicate effectively with organization stakeholders, especially the Board of Directors, on fundraising events, marketing plans, and revenue strategies.
Supervise student managers overseeing administrative departments of human resources, information systems, finance, distribution and production.
Delegate daily operations to the appropriate departments, while focusing on larger long- term plans such as revenue growth.
Empower student employees through training programs, motivational leadership and programs to develop Daily staff.
Foster an energetic and passionate work environment that includes strong mentoring relationships with Daily employees.
Advise the editorial and business departments on management and administrative matters.
Serve as a staff liaison between the Board of Directors and the Daily’s operations and outreach.

Experience:
More than eight years of experience managing a staff and leading people to achieve strategic organizational goals. Prior experience in a non-profit environment is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree in journalism, business, or management, or equivalent work experience.
Demonstrated leadership with fundraising and revenue-generating strategies.
Demonstrated success in identifying, leading and executing innovative opportunities to advance an organization.
Demonstrated commitment to the Minnesota Daily’s mission of journalism and student training.
The ability to work collaboratively with the Board of Directors and University stakeholders and to build relationships.
A strong working knowledge of finance and business IT needs.

Work Environment/ Physical Demands:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Occasional travel to local current and prospective donors as well as University stakeholders.
Some standing for presentations as needed.
