Jakub Tolar will be the next dean of the University Medical School, University President Eric Kaler announced Friday.

Tolar, whose appointment is pending Board of Regents approval, will start in his new position on Monday, and will serve as interim vice president for the Health Sciences “while the University determines an ideal structure for the continued success of our health sciences,” Kaler said in an emailed statement to staff and faculty.

The two positions of Medical School dean and vice president of Health Sciences were left vacant after Kaler announced Monday that Brooks Jackson was leaving his position to work as dean of the University of Iowa’s medical school. Jackson had been at the school since 2014, and will assume his new role at Iowa by Nov. 30.

Tolar, a pediatrician who specializes in blood and marrow transplantation, has been a faculty member at the University of Minnesota for 25 years. Tolar had been serving as the executive vice dean of the University Medical School.

“I am confident that Jakub will continue our positive momentum through his energetic commitment to advancing discovery, educating the next generation of health care leaders, and leading in high-quality clinical care,” Kaler said in the email.
