Elderly man robbed in Southeast Como

Police arrested five suspects an hour after the attack and found his stolen wallet.

Early Saturday morning an elderly Minneapolis man was coming home from work when he was assaulted and robbed in the Southeast Como neighborhood, according to a police report.

Xuyen Dien, 62, was walking down an alley near 1084 22nd Avenue Southeast on his way home when a group of male teenagers in black clothes approached him.

The boys punched Dien in the face, cut him and pushed him to the ground before taking his wallet, he said.

“I went home and took the car and went to look for them to take back my wallet,” he said.

Shortly after going out to look for the boys, Dien found a police officer and told her what had happened to him.

The officer called the University Police Department’s Canine Unit and the dog was able to track the boys to 2319 Cole Avenue Southeast, about three blocks from where the robbery occurred.

At about 2 a.m., approximately one hour after the attack, Dien identified the four boys as the ones who had attacked him.

His wallet was found in the pants of one of the boys and was only missing $20, Dien said.

Dontae Robinson, 18, was taken to Hennepin County jail for his part in the robbery. Three other juveniles were also arrested and were taken to the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.

Another juvenile was arrested later and taken to jail after further investigation into the case, according to the report.

Dien said he sustained a black eye and a torn rotator cuff from the attack. He is attending therapy for the shoulder injury, but said he may need to have surgery to repair the damaged muscles in his shoulder.

Jared cutout stolen from Subway

A University student was caught March 11 by Minneapolis police when he tried to steal a giant cardboard cutout from the Dinkytown Subway around closing time.

The officers saw marketing and geography sophomore Nicolas Zebley enter the business at 11 p.m. with a black mask on his face, according to the police report.

Zebley grabbed the cardboard cutout of the famous Subway dieter Jared and ran back outside.

He got into a vehicle parked in the lot next to the business, where two other men were waiting for him, Minneapolis Police Sgt. Bill Palmer said.

Officers approached the vehicle and took Zebley into custody. He was ticketed for the theft and released.

Zebley said the whole thing was only a prank and that he just wanted the giant cutout.

“I really regret doing it, but at the time I didn’t see it as a big issue,” he said.

17-year-old boy assaulted near East Bank

In a random late-night attack, March 18, a 17-year-old boy was assaulted in the Prospect Park neighborhood according to a Minneapolis police report.

A man approached the boy, who was walking near Essex Street Southeast and Huron Boulevard Southeast, around 11 p.m. and asked him for his money. The boy told him he didn’t have any money.

The suspect apparently didn’t like the answer so he punched the boy in the face and ran away, according to the report.

Police said the suspect is a white male in his 30s. The report described the suspect as between 6-feet, 5-inches and 6-feet, 9-inches tall with a muscular build and a shaved head.

The boy was taken to the hospital and had a bloody lip and a loose tooth.
