Nearly two months after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman near the University of Minnesota campus, a Wayzata man has been sentenced to serve more than 24 years in prison, according to the Hennepin County AttorneyâÄôs Office. He was facing a maximum of 30 years in prison. Christopher Karls, 24, was charged with a May 4 break-in at a womanâÄôs apartment building in the Southeast Como neighborhood. Karls threatened the woman with a knife before raping her and then forcing her to take a shower. The woman, who had no previous relationship with Karls, jumped out of a second-story window in the apartment wearing only a towel and broke her ankle while trying to escape, according to the complaint. The investigation matched DNA found at the scene to KarlsâÄô. Karls pleaded guilty to three counts of burglary and criminal sexual conduct, but both charges were merged into one count burglary and one count criminal sexual conduct at today’s sentencing. Karls also pled guilty to kidnapping.
