Trent Lockett says he’ll transfer to Marquette

Arizona State men's basketball guard Trent Lockett tweeted Saturday that he will play his senior season at Marquette, a school he had considered after announcing in March he would transfer from ASU.

Lockett said he wanted to play closer to his mother, who lives in Minnesota and has cancer. A graduate of Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minn., Lockett averaged 10.8 points and 4.7 rebounds in his three-year career at ASU.

"The reason I am transferring is to be closer to my mom, but at the same time I needed to make a good basketball decision, and Marquette provides a great fit for me to finish my collegiate basketball career," Lockett said in an ASU release.

Media had speculated that the 6-foot-5-inch Lockett could transfer to Minnesota, where he would likely have started at either small forward or shooting guard. The Gophers are loaded with frontcourt depth but lack ball handlers in the backcourt.

Minnesota does not have a scholarship available for 2012-13. Star forward Trevor Mbakwe took the last spot when he announced in April he would return for a sixth season.

Marquette made the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament last year before being upset by Florida.

The Gophers have not made the NCAA tournament since 2009-10 and have finished with a losing record in the Big Ten two years in a row.
