Sophomore Philip Nelson will start at quarterback against Penn State today, the Gophers announced Thursday.
This is Nelson's second-consecutive start. Nelson earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors Monday after throwing for 298 yards and four touchdowns in Minnesota 42-39 win over Indiana last Saturday.
Nelson and the Gophers will look for a fourth-consecutive win when they play Penn State today. Minnesota hasn't won four-consecutive Big Ten games since 1975-76.
The Nittany Lions are 5-3 overall, 2-2 in the Big Ten and are coming off a 24-17 overtime win over Illinois last Saturday.
Freshman quarterback Christian Hackenberg leads Penn State with 2,024 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. Junior wide receiver Allen Robinson has been his main target, catching 66 passes for 1,043 yards and six touchdowns.
"We'll have to pay attention to him," Minnesota acting head coach and defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys said of Robinson. "But at the same time, we can't let somebody else go off and have a career day."
Minnesota and Penn State kick off in about 20 minutes from TCF Bank Stadium. Following @dailyatthebank for updates.
