Minnesota’s women’s gymnastics team defeated Utah State in its final regular-season meet at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday.
The Gophers recorded 194.850 points in the win, and won every event. Senior Laura Johnson claimed an individual title in the vault, her 25th event title of the season, and won the all-around, her sixth all-around win of the year.
Other event winners for Minnesota included Stephanie Funk, Ashley Mutchler and Carmelina Carabajal.
The Gophers will compete this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich.
Softball in California
Minnesota’s softball team lost three of four games last weekend at the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.
The Gophers (11-14) lost to Columbia 5-4 in their tournament finale Sunday. Rene Konderik took the loss in relief for Minnesota. The Gophers scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead, but Columbia countered with three in the top of the third and got the winning run in the top of the seventh. Leftfielder Lindsey Erickson drove in three runs in the second with a bases-clearing double for the Gophers.
On Saturday Minnesota split a pair of games. The Gophers defeated Utah State 1-0 on the strength of a one-hit shutout from redshirt freshman Katie Dalen. Minnesota’s lone run came on a second inning RBI single by freshman Shannon Stemper. The Gophers lost to Syracuse 4-2 on Saturday, with Briana Hassett taking the loss.
In its tournament opener on Friday, Minnesota lost a 3-2 decision to Princeton. Hassett was the loser for the Gophers. Junior catcher Megan Higginbotham was 2-3 with a double in the loss.
