No. 10 Minnesota (7-2-1) defeated No. 19 Ohio State (6-3-1) 3-0 at home in its second match of the Big Ten season Sunday.
The Gophers quickly took the lead in the 4th minute of the game with a goal by senior midfielder Josee Stiever.
Minnesota created plenty of scoring chances after the first goal. Ohio State goalkeeper Megan Geldernick made four saves in the first half to keep Ohio State in the match.
A penalty kick was awarded to the Gophers in the 24th minute, but they were unable to convert.
Ohio State didn’t get a shot on goal in the first half.
Ohio State found more opportunities to test Minnesota senior goalie Tarah Hobbs in the second half, but Hobbs kept a clean sheet with 5 saves on the day.
It was an even battle in the second half until Minnesota captain and senior forward Simone Kolander scored in the 71st minute. She was assisted with a through ball from junior forward and defender Julianna Gernes.
Junior forward Sydney Squires added another goal in the 86th minute off an assist from freshman defender Nikki Albrecht.
The match ended 3-0 and Minnesota remained unbeaten after its first two conference matches.
