Junior Jayson Ness and the rest of the Gophers may not have had the wrestling season they wanted, but the spring isn’t a time to dwell on that. The spring is a time for winter sports to hand out season awards, and Ness won his share Sunday, being named Most Valuable Wrestler, winning an All-American Award and winning one of the team’s two academic awards. Ness won his third All-American Award this year, moving up to the 133-pound division and taking third place at the NCAA championships. He led the team with 19 falls, breaking the career record, and finished 38-8. It wasn’t the type of season the team was hoping for, though, with a 15-8 dual meet record and 14th place finish at the NCAA championships, breaking a streak of 12-straight top-10 finishes. Freshman Zach Sanders was a bright spot, finishing sixth at the NCAA tournament and 39-10 overall. He was named Most Outstanding Freshman and Most Exciting Wrestler. Other award-winners were Mike Thorn (Most Dedicated Wrestler), senior Tyler Safratowich (Leadership Award), Ben Berhow (Chris Berglin Most Improved Wrestler) and Matthew Everson and Gordon Bierschenk (Most Courageous Wrestler). Alleged âÄòFat PatâÄô tweet The Gophers football team may officially have its first Twitter controversy. Tensions between head coach Tim Brewster and longtime Star Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse are nothing new, but according to Reusse and several other sources including a Star Tribune column, Brewster tweeted an offensive message toward the often critical Reusse but was forced to take it down. According to Reusse’s blog, several people e-mailed him about a Brewster tweet that read âÄúHow would you like to wake up in the morning and look in the mirror âĦ if [sic] your Fat Pat.âÄôâÄô Brewster has been tweeting at twitter.com/play4brew since March and has more than 750 users following his account. Vanek to play in world championships Former Gophers men’s hockey player Thomas Vanek has been added to the list of Gophers who have earned a spot on rosters for the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in Switzerland starting April 24. Vanek, who led the Gophers to a national championship as a first year and is now with the Sabres, was fifth in the NHL in scoring last season. HeâÄôll suit up for Austria, joining two other former Gophers in the World Championships, Kyle Okposo and Keith Ballard, who will represent the United States.
