GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) âÄî Federal investigators say alcohol contributed to the death of a Minnesota teen who fell through a platform gap on New York’s Long Island Rail Road. The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday that after 18-year-old Natalie Smead fell, she failed to follow a conductor’s instructions to remain still until help arrived. Instead, Smead crawled under the platform and onto adjacent tracks. The Northfield, Minn. resident was killed by another train. A toxicology report found her blood-alcohol content was 0.23 percent. The legal limit for driving in New York is 0.08. After Smead’s August 2006 death, the LIRR began a massive program to close gaps between trains and platforms at its 125 stations.
