For legions of ‘Mats fans still clinging to the hope of a reunion – Tommy Stinson has bad news for you. The current GNR bassist and onetime Replacements bassist/drunk little kid issued these words that all but destroy the possibility of an original member (sans Bob Stinson, R.I.P.) reunion. For Stinson, it appears, the Rhino re-issues of many of The ‘Mat’s records this past year are a fitting enough curtain call for the Minneapolis rock heroes.
Sill, a jam session between frontman Paul Westerberg and Stinson last fall got the rumor mill churning on overdrive. It was the first significant lurch towards a possible reunion since the band’s demise in 1991.
On another interesting note, apparently the band was offered a six-figure payday in order to play the Coachella Festival this year. And, it was turned down. Axl must be spreading the “Chinese Democracy” wealth pretty fairly for an offer that enticing to be tossed aside.
Will new generations of cheated Minneapolis natives ever have their much longed for opportunity to see The Replacements play? Chances appear slim (Dunlap! LOL!).
Paul, Tommy, Chris – you’re heartbreakers.
