A shooting early Wednesday near the University of Minnesota has left one person in serious, but stable condition, according to police. 

According to Minneapolis Police Department spokesperson John Elder, officers responded to the corner 27th Avenue Southeast and Essex Street Southeast on a report of shots fired around 1 a.m. Initially, the officers were told it was fireworks, Elder said in an email statement.  

Shortly after, officers were informed of a gunshot victim walking into a hospital at the University, Elder said in an email. The victim is reported to be in serious but stable condition. 

Students at the University were not informed through the SafeU notification system due to a geographical technicality. The shooting happened some distance “off-campus” and is, therefore, out of UMPD’s jurisdiction, according to University spokesperson Lacey Nygard. This is all determined under the Cleary Act, which requires certain universities to, “to maintain and disclose campus crime statistics and security information.”

The scene has been located and processed, but no one is in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
