The Minnesota menâÄôs golf team will have a home course advantage this weekend in its first home tournament of the year. The Gophers host the Gopher Invitational at Spring Hill Golf Course in Wayzata. The par 72 event starts Friday with a shotgun start and will end Sunday. Playing on a familiar course, the Gophers know the holes better than the other teams, something associate head coach Andrew Tank said will help with both club choice and shots on the green. However, first-year Derek Chang has only seen the course once. He will be playing in his first tournament with the Gophers and will count on advice from seniors Victor Almstrom, Yu Katayama and Andy Paulson and junior Ben Pisani, also competing in the tournament. âÄúI expect him to play well,âÄù Tank said. âÄúI wouldnâÄôt be surprised if he has a few growing pains. I think he will be in good shape.âÄù Last year, the Gophers finished eighth out of 12 teams with a strong individual performance from Almstrom, who finished third. If he plays well this weekend, there isnâÄôt much keeping him out of contention for first place. Louisiana State University will arrive in the Twin Cities with the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the country, according to Golfweek Magazine. Eight of the 12 teams at the tournament competed in the NCAA regional tournament in 2008, with the University of Washington and the University of Texas qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Texas is coming in as the highest ranked team, at 32nd overall, by Golfweek. âÄúThey are somebody to benchmark our success against,âÄù Tank said. WomenâÄôs golf The Minnesota womenâÄôs golf team also has its first tournament this weekend. The womenâÄôs golf team will compete at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich. with players shooting 36 holes on Saturday and finishing with 18 on Sunday. The Gophers roster includes eight returning players with collegiate golf experience and two first-years. With five spots available for team play, sophomores Mary Narzisi, Teresa Puga and Michele Edlin and seniors Kelli Berns and Paige Bromen will be in the lineup this weekend.
