Nelson, Mortell earn Big Ten honors

Two University of Minnesota football players have earned Big Ten Player of the Weeks honors, the conference announced Monday.

Sophomore quarterback Philip Nelson earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors and redshirt sophomore punter Peter Mortell earned Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

Both players helped Minneota to a 42-39 victory over Indiana on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind.

Nelson completed 16 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns, including an eventual game-winning, 50-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman tight end Maxx Williams late in the fourth quarter.

Nelson became Minnesota's first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week winner since the conference honored Adam Weber in 2009.

Mortell averaged 43 yards per punt Saturday and twice pinned Indiana inside its own 20-yard line.  Mortell has averaged 42.5 per punt this season and his pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 13 times.

The Gophers (7-2, 3-2 Big Ten) play Penn State (5-3, 2-2 Big Ten) at 11 a.m. Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.
