Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Watch the Throne" was one of last year's most successful and deliriously fun albums. It stands as an example of what can happen when two insanely talented friends just start throwing things at the wall to see what sticks (“I’m planking on a million”) or throwing money around just for the sake of glorious excess (an Otis Redding sample bordering on sacrilegious, a Curtis Mayfield sample relegated to a bonus track). It was only appropriate that the trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” prominently featured the Frank Ocean-featured “No Church in the Wild.”
Now less than a year later, they’re ready to do it all over again. Producer and frequent ‘Ye collaborator Mike Dean told Quiet Lunch that he’s currently busy working on West’s G.O.O.D. Music compilation, but that “Watch The Throne 2” is on the horizon.
“It's not started yet, but it's coming,” Dean said. Jay-Z was similarly optimistic last December when he told MTV that 2012 would see not only a new “Watch The Throne” but also new records from himself and West.
With Kanye fresh off the Cannes premiere of his art film “Cruel Summer” and Jay-Z welcoming a new baby into the world, it’s hard to imagine when they’ll have time to record a follow-up album. But hopefully this early buzz means that we’ll hear Kanye’s indignant “hah!?” rip the sky again soon enough.
