After more than two weeks of protests across Egypt calling for his departure, President Hosni Mubarak has left the country and stepped down, according to a statement from Vice President Omar Suleiman.
The autocratic ruler of 30 years transferred his powers to the country’s military forces, according to coverage on CNN.
The announcement came at approximately 10 a.m. on Minnesota’s clock.
This comes on the heels of yesterday night’s events, when news spread that Mubarak would step down at an official announcement in front of protestors. The embattled president shocked crowds when he insisted he would remain in office until September.
