The Minnesota men’s tennis team came away with one win in three tries this weekend at the Baseline Tennis Center, even though the Gophers nearly swept their competition.
On Saturday, coach Geoff Young’s team started their day by dominating University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 7-0.
Things didn’t go as smoothly later in the day, however, as the Gophers fell 4-3 to Oklahoma.
Minnesota and the Sooners split their six singles matches, but Oklahoma swept all three doubles matches to earn the all-important doubles point.
The Gophers suffered a similar setback on Sunday despite a strong comeback bid, falling 4-3 to Drake.
Minnesota, which trailed at one point 3-0 in the dual, made things interesting after its slow start.
No. 1 singles player Raoul Schwark, ranked 46th in the country, beat the nation’s 16th-ranked player, Dailbor Pavic, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to tighten the meet. But in the end, the doubles point again came back to haunt the Gophers, who lost two of three doubles matches on the day, dropping the point needed for victory.
