A number of robberies occurred near campus over the past week, while an on-campus auto theft interrupted otherwise quiet campus activities.
A University of Minnesota student was reportedly robbed on Sunday at the corner of 15th Avenue Southeast and University Avenue Southeast near D.P. Dough. The student was approached by a suspect around 12:30 a.m. who took her mobile phone from her. The student attempted to take the phone back and suffered minor injuries during the altercation.
The suspect fled the scene in a black SUV with a group of other individuals.
Minneapolis Police Department officers responded to the call and spoke with another victim at the scene who said the same suspect unsuccessfully tried to take their purse. The same suspect(s) were believed to be involved in another incident half an hour earlier at the intersection of 15th Avenue Southeast and 8th Street Southeast, according to a University of Minnesota timely warning.
A woman was reportedly robbed and assaulted on Thursday around 6:20 a.m at the intersection of Bedford Street Southeast and University Avenue Southeast in Prospect Park. The suspect pushed the victim down, causing her phone and cash to fall out of her pocket. The suspect then took the money and ran off. The victim went to the hospital and reported the incident to MPD around 2:30 p.m.
MPD responded to another robbery early Sunday morning around 1 a.m. A woman was walking on the corner of 13th Avenue Southeast and Como Avenue Southeast near Van Cleve Park when a suspect snatched her purse and took off running.
Two auto thefts occurred on or near campus in the past week. A University student’s car was stolen around 5 p.m. on Saturday on 14th Avenue Southeast near Target Express in Dinkytown. The car was stolen without keys.
On Friday, a University student’s car was stolen from the Washington Avenue parking ramp on campus around 3:40 p.m. The car had been left running for about an hour and 20 minutes, said University of Minnesota Police Department lieutenant Chuck Miner, making it an easy target for theft.
Juveniles were arrested in the stolen vehicle by the Minnesota State Patrol later that evening in north Minneapolis, according to Miner.
“It’s very rare for a vehicle to be stolen in our parking ramps,” he said. “Other than that, it has been fairly quiet around campus. Some accidents, little to no theft and some driving incidents.”
