Redshirt freshman quarterback Clint Brewster ended his playing career at the University on Tuesday and will transfer for the upcoming school year.

The son of Gophers coach Tim Brewster was unavailable for comment and, although it is unknown where he will transfer, his reasons for leaving are less of a mystery.

With sophomore quarterback Adam Weber locked in as the starter for next year – and two additional seasons of eligibility following that – Clint Brewster’s window of playing time was already small.

Add incoming freshmen like Marquis Gray to the equation, and Clint Brewster’s decision is not surprising.

Even his father briefly spoke on the matter last week, saying he would be fine with whatever his son decided, as long as he was “a man about it.”

“Clint Brewster has decided to transfer,” Tim Brewster said in a brief statement. “I respect and admire Clint’s decision to further his education and play football elsewhere.”

Wheeler close to deal

Former Gophers forward Blake Wheeler has reportedly told his agent to finalize a two-year deal that would make him a member of the Boston Bruins organization.

Wheeler, who led the Gophers with 35 points, left the program last month in hopes of signing an NHL contract.

At the time, many thought it would be with the Phoenix Coyotes, who drafted Wheeler fifth overall in the 2004 draft.

However, Wheeler and the Coyotes were unable to come to terms, and the former Breck standout became a free agent.

Wheeler’s agent, Matt Keator, claimed that 20 NHL teams were interested in his client, including the Minnesota Wild. But in the end, Wheeler decided on Boston.

With the Bruins, Wheeler will likely be able to return to his natural position as winger – he was moved to center with the Gophers, more or less out of necessity.

He’ll also be reunited with former Gophers forward Phil Kessel, who has been with Boston for two years.

Wheeler cannot comment on the unofficial signing until July 1 – the first day the league allows teams to sign unrestricted free agents.
