A St. Paul selection committee has narrowed the field of 14 police chief applicants down to five candidates.

After a nationwide search, the committee’s top five are all internal applicants, one of whom St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly will pick to be the city’s next chief.

The St. Paul City Council must approve Kelly’s selection before that person replaces current St. Paul Police Chief William Finney.

The candidates are Cmdr. Dennis Jensen, Cmdr. Tim Leslie, Cmdr. Colleen Luna, Assistant Chief Richard Gardell and Cmdr. John Harrington.
